Overview

The wild ancestor of the domestic pigeon, gray with iridescent neck and dark wing bars.

History & Origin

The Rock Pigeon occurs naturally in Europe / Asia / North Africa. Pigeons and doves (Columbidae) occur on every continent except the coldest polar regions, from city streets to remote forests and islands. The rock pigeon is the wild ancestor of the domestic and fancy pigeon diversity we see today.

Appearance & Size

It is a Small-Medium (30-36cm) bird. They are compact, small-headed birds with a short slender bill, soft dense plumage and a characteristic bobbing walk; many show iridescent neck feathers and a broad tail.

Temperament & Behavior

Doves and pigeons are generally gentle, calm and social, often kept in pairs. They are among the easiest and quietest birds to keep, making good first birds for beginners.

Care & Husbandry

Their diet is mainly seeds and grains, supplemented by greens, fruit and, for some species, invertebrates; they need access to grit to grind food and fresh water for drinking and bathing. They need a clean flight or cage, a balanced seed or pellet mix, grit, regular bathing water and shelter from draughts. Most are hardy and straightforward to maintain.

Health & Lifespan

Watch for trichomonosis ('canker'), paramyxovirus, coccidiosis and respiratory infections. With good care they commonly live 6-15 years.

Popularity & Recognition

The domestic pigeon is one of the oldest domesticated birds, bred for racing, exhibition and messenger roles; doves are global symbols of peace and feature in countless cultures.
