Overview

The Chartreux is a rare French breed with a woolly blue-grey short coat and copper or gold eyes. Famous for a quiet, almost silent voice and a calm, observant nature, it is stocky and muscular yet very gentle.

History & Origin

A breed of great antiquity tied to French monasteries (legend links it to the Carthusian order), the Chartreux was nearly lost after the wars and was rebuilt from French farm cats, with Persians used sparingly in revival.

Appearance & Coat

A medium-to-large, robust cat with a broad round head, full cheeks and a dense, water-repellent double coat of even blue-grey. The vivid copper or gold eyes contrast beautifully with the fur.

Temperament

Chartreux cats are calm, loyal and quietly affectionate, often forming a strong bond with one person. They are playful in a restrained way and get along well in peaceful homes.

Care & Grooming

The plush double coat benefits from weekly brushing, more during seasonal sheds. They are low-maintenance companions that appreciate a tranquil environment.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan is 12–15 years. Robust and healthy overall; like many blue cats, watch for occasional urinary or dental issues with standard preventive care.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
