Overview
The Sphynx is a famous nearly hairless breed with warm, wrinkled skin and large ears, developed in Canada. Extremely affectionate, outgoing and attention-seeking, it needs warmth and regular bathing.
History & Origin
The modern breed descends from a hairless kitten born in Toronto in 1966; breeders used Devon Rex and other cats to establish the recessive hairless gene into a healthy, distinctive breed.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, muscular cat with a wedge head, huge ears, prominent cheekbones and a near-bare suede-like skin (fine peach-fuzz may be present). The wrinkled face and body are endearing trademarks.
Temperament
Sphynx are gregarious, playful and utterly devoted, often acting like perpetual kittens. They crave human contact and do poorly if left alone.
Care & Grooming
Without fur to absorb oils, they need weekly bathing and ear cleaning. They are cold-sensitive and must live indoors with warm spots and clothing/blankets in winter.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. Watch for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and skin/teeth issues; ethical breeding and vet care are essential.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
