Overview
A large reddish tegu of South America, omnivorous and adaptable.
History & Origin
The teiid lizard is native to South America. It belongs to the family Teiids, a lineage of lizards distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist reptile keepers.
Appearance & Size
Red Tegu is a large (100–120 cm) lizard.
Temperament
It shows the typical temperament of its group—research the species for handling guidance.
Care & Husbandry
Teiids (e.g. tegus) are large, intelligent omnivores that need spacious enclosures, high heat, strong UVB and enrichment. Diet includes insects, eggs, fruit and lean meat; Argentine tegus are known for dog-like tameness but require expert-level commitment and winter brumation awareness.
Health & Lifespan
Large tegus need careful juvenile diet to avoid fast growth defects; adults are prone to obesity and require enrichment. Responsible breeding and brumation management matter for long-term health. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 15–25 years.
Popularity & Recognition
Teiids include the Argentine black-and-white tegu, famed for intelligence and tameness, and the whiptail lizards—some all-female parthenogenetic species.
