Overview

A tiny diurnal gecko, brilliantly colored, among the smallest geckos.

History & Origin

The gecko is native to Madagascar. It belongs to the family Geckos, a lineage of lizards distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist reptile keepers.

Appearance & Size

Pygmy Day Gecko is a miniature (6–8 cm) lizard.

Temperament

Active and alert, with readily observable behaviour; enrichment and space keep them engaged.

Care & Husbandry

Most geckos are insectivorous; arboreal species (e.g. crested geckos) also take fruit-based diets, while ground geckos thrive on crickets and mealworms dusted with calcium and vitamins. Provide a thermogradient, UVB lighting for diurnal species, humidity appropriate to the species, and multiple hiding spots. Many geckos lack eyelids and need regular misting rather than a water bowl.

Health & Lifespan

Common issues include metabolic bone disease (from low calcium/UVB), stuck sheds (especially on toes/tail), and parasitism. Maintain correct temperatures and supplementation; tail loss is normal and regenerates as a simpler stump. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 8–12 years.

Popularity & Recognition

Geckos are among the most popular pet reptiles worldwide—leopard and crested geckos alone anchor a massive hobby. Famous traits include toe pads that climb smooth surfaces, vocalisations, and (in many) eyelid-less eyes cleaned by licking.
