Overview
A small domesticated donkey with a sturdy body, long ears and a gentle, social personality. Hardy, affectionate and long-lived; needs a companion and room to roam.
History & Origin
The Miniature Donkey is a small exotic mammal that developed in its native region. Like most modern companion exotic species it was shaped by selective breeding for its type, temperament and colour, and is now kept widely by enthusiasts around the world.
Appearance & Size
It falls into the small (120-300kg) size group. A small domesticated donkey with a sturdy body, long ears and a gentle, social personality. As a miniature equine it shows the typical form and proportions of its group.
Temperament & Behavior
The Miniature Donkey is typically social, gentle, affectionate. With patient, consistent handling it becomes a rewarding companion; like all small mammals it thrives on routine, safe space to explore and respectful interaction.
Care & Husbandry
Miniature horses and donkeys are long-lived, herd-oriented animals that need safe pasture or a paddock, a shelter, daily forage (grass/hay) suited to their size, a measured concentrate feed, fresh water and farrier hoof care every 6–8 weeks. They are social and should not be kept entirely alone. Despite their size they need committed, knowledgeable husbandry.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is often 25-35+ years (miniature equines can reach 25–35). Watch for obesity, laminitis, dental issues, parasitism and, in donkeys, hyperlipaemia. Routine vaccination, deworming and farrier care keep them healthy.
Popularity & Recognition
Miniature horses and donkeys are kept as gentle companions and shown in miniature-equine classes, valued for their calm temperament.
