Overview

A long-haired breed with very long, silky flowing coat that requires daily grooming. Gentle, calm and best for owners with grooming time.

History & Origin

The Peruvian Guinea Pig is a small exotic mammal that developed in Peru. Like most modern companion exotic species it was shaped by selective breeding for its type, temperament and colour, and is now kept widely by enthusiasts around the world.

Appearance & Size

It falls into the small (0.7-1.2kg) size group. A long-haired breed with very long, silky flowing coat that requires daily grooming. As a guinea pig it shows the typical form and proportions of its group.

Temperament & Behavior

The Peruvian Guinea Pig is typically calm, gentle. With patient, consistent handling it becomes a rewarding companion; like all small mammals it thrives on routine, safe space to explore and respectful interaction.

Care & Husbandry

Guinea pigs need a roomy, draft-free cage with soft bedding, daily fresh hay as the basis of their diet, guinea-pig pellets fortified with vitamin C, and vegetables rich in vitamin C daily — unlike most mammals they cannot synthesise vitamin C and develop scurvy without it. They are social and happiest in pairs or small groups. Add hideouts, chew toys and daily supervised floor time.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan is typically 5-7 years. Guinea pigs are prone to vitamin C deficiency (scurvy), overgrown molars, respiratory infections and foot sores from damp bedding. Regular weighing and an exotic vet catch problems early.

Popularity & Recognition

Guinea pigs are among the most popular small pets worldwide, with many recognised breeds shown by clubs such as the American Cavy Breeders Association.
