Overview
The American Curl is distinguished by its uniquely backward-curled ears, with a silky coat and an affectionate, playful nature. Both short- and long-haired varieties exist; it is an easygoing family companion.
History & Origin
The breed began with a stray black kitten with curled ears taken in by a California family in 1981; the curl is a dominant mutation, and the breed was developed through careful selection.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, elegant cat with a rounded head and ears that curl back and outward (never touching the head), in silky short or long coats of any colour. Kittens are born with straight ears that curl within weeks.
Temperament
American Curls are people-oriented, gentle and playful without being demanding. They remain kittenish and get along with children and other pets.
Care & Grooming
Brush by coat length; handle the delicate ears gently and never force them. They are otherwise low-maintenance.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. A healthy breed with no major hereditary diseases linked to the ear mutation.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF and the GCCF.
