Overview
An aggressive shark that can swim far into freshwater rivers, found in both sea and estuaries. Native to Tropical to temperate waters worldwide, it is a popular choice among aquarists for its distinctive appearance and behavior.
History & Origin
Bull Shark originates from Tropical to temperate waters worldwide. It has been kept and selectively bred in the aquarium hobby for generations, producing many color forms and regional variants developed through captive breeding.
Appearance & Size
Bull Shark is a large fish, generally measuring about 2–3.5 m when fully grown. Its body shape and species-specific coloration make it easy to recognize among Sharks.
Temperament
Bull Shark is generally territorial and can be aggressive toward smaller or similar-shaped tankmates; keep it with robust, size-compatible species and provide ample space and visual barriers.
Care & Husbandry
A marine species best suited to experienced saltwater aquarists, it requires a mature, well-established aquarium with stable salinity (around 1.023–1.025 specific gravity), strong filtration and pristine water quality. Given its size, provide a spacious tank with robust filtration and room to swim. Feed a varied diet of high-quality prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen items, and quarantine new arrivals before adding them to the display.
Health & Lifespan
With good water quality and a balanced diet, Bull Shark typically lives 20–30 years in captivity. Watch for common aquarium ailments such as parasites, fungal infections and stress-related disease, and maintain stable parameters to keep it thriving.
Popularity & Recognition
Aquarium sharks such as bamboo and epaulette sharks bring a touch of the ocean's apex predator to very large, specialized marine systems.
