Overview

The Burmese is a compact, muscular cat with a glossy short coat in rich sable and a range of other colours, set off by large expressive golden eyes. Extremely affectionate, vocal and people-loving, it is often described as dog-like.

History & Origin

The modern breed descends from a single walnut-brown cat, Wong Mau, brought from Burma (Myanmar) to the United States in the 1930s and crossed with Siamese. It was developed in America and Britain into today's sable and dilute varieties.

Appearance & Coat

Medium-sized with a rounded, substantial body, short legs and a short, satin coat that lies close to the skin. Recognised colours include sable, champagne, blue and platinum (and red/cream tortie series in some registries).

Temperament

Burmese are intensely social, vocal and craving of company — they dislike being left alone and will “talk” to their people. Their affectionate, kitten-like energy lasts well into adulthood.

Care & Grooming

The short coat needs only occasional brushing. High sociability means they need companions (human or feline) and interactive play; they adapt well to indoor life.

Health & Lifespan

Average lifespan is 12–16 years. Some lines carry a risk of diabetes mellitus and craniofacial defects; responsible breeders test accordingly.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
