Black-throated Monitor
A large monitor with a dark body and light throat, powerful and intelligent.
Overview
A large monitor with a dark body and light throat, powerful and intelligent.
History & Origin
The monitor lizard is native to Africa. It belongs to the family Monitor Lizards, a lineage of lizards distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist reptile keepers.
Appearance & Size
Black-throated Monitor is a large (120–150 cm) lizard.
Temperament
Active and alert, with readily observable behaviour; enrichment and space keep them engaged.
Care & Husbandry
Monitor lizards are intelligent, powerful carnivores needing very large enclosures, secure locks, high temperatures, strong UVB and enrichment. Diet spans insects, rodents, eggs and fish depending on species; large monitors (e.g. Asian water monitor) are advanced, potentially dangerous captives unsuitable for most keepers.
Health & Lifespan
Powerful biters and scratches, plus susceptibility to parasites and obesity in over-fed captives. Large species need secure handling and experienced veterinary support; enrichment prevents stereotypic behaviour. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 15–25 years.
Popularity & Recognition
Monitors (Varanus) are the largest lizards after crocodilians; the Komodo dragon is the apex. Their intelligence and size make them legendary among advanced keepers.
