One of the oldest known cat breeds, with a distinctive ticked (agouti) coat, almond-shaped amber eyes and an active, playful, affectionate nature.

Overview

The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known domestic cat breeds, recognised by its short, finely ticked (agouti) coat that shimmers with alternating light and dark bands on each hair. Medium-sized, muscular and elegant, it carries almond-shaped amber or green eyes and a lithe, athletic frame.

History & Origin

Long thought to descend from the sacred cats of ancient Egypt, the breed takes its name from Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia), though its true roots are more likely in the Indian Ocean coast and Southeast Asia. Cats of this type reached Europe in the late 19th century and were formalised as a breed in Britain.

Appearance & Coat

Abyssinians are medium-sized with a foreign-type, lean but muscular body, a moderately wedged head and large cupped ears. The hallmark is the ticked coat — ruddy, red, blue or fawn — with four to six bands of colour per hair and almost no tabby barring on the body.

Temperament

Abyssinians are active, playful and deeply affectionate, often described as “busy” cats that enjoy climbing, fetching and investigating. They bond closely with their people yet can be cautious with strangers, and they do best with company and plenty of enrichment.

Care & Grooming

The short coat needs only a weekly brush to remove loose hair and keep it gleaming. Abyssinians shed little, but they are high-energy and need daily interactive play, cat trees and puzzle toys to stay happy.

Health & Lifespan

Average lifespan is 12–15 years. The breed is generally healthy, though breeders screen for pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKdef), progressive retinal atrophy and renal amyloidosis. Regular dental care is advised.

Recognition

Recognised by all major registries including TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
