Overview

A color mutation of the chinchilla with a warm beige/tan coat and pink ears. Gentle and calm, with the same care needs as the standard gray.

History & Origin

The Beige Chinchilla is a small exotic mammal that developed in its native region. Like most modern companion exotic species it was shaped by selective breeding for its type, temperament and colour, and is now kept widely by enthusiasts around the world.

Appearance & Size

It falls into the small (0.4-0.6kg) size group. A color mutation of the chinchilla with a warm beige/tan coat and pink ears. As a chinchilla it shows the typical form and proportions of its group.

Temperament & Behavior

The Beige Chinchilla is typically calm, gentle. With patient, consistent handling it becomes a rewarding companion; like all small mammals it thrives on routine, safe space to explore and respectful interaction.

Care & Husbandry

Chinchillas need a cool, dry, well-ventilated environment (ideally below 24°C/75°F and low humidity) because they overheat easily. They require a large multi-level cage, dust baths 2–3 times a week (their dense fur cannot be washed with water), and a diet of high-quality grass hay and chinchilla pellets with very limited treats. Handle gently and never by the tail.

Health & Lifespan

With proper care chinchillas live 10-15+ years, often 10–15. Watch for heatstroke, dental overgrowth (their teeth grow continuously), fur-chewing from stress and digestive upset. A vet experienced with exotic small mammals is essential.

Popularity & Recognition

Chinchillas are prized for their luxuriant fur and kept both as pets and (historically) for fur; breed standards are maintained by chinchilla clubs.
