Overview
The Ragdoll is a large, semi-longhaired breed with striking blue eyes and colourpoint markings, famous for going limp and relaxed when picked up. Extremely gentle, affectionate and laid-back, it is an ideal family companion.
History & Origin
Created in California in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker from a white Persian-type cat and Birman-like lines; the breed's docile “floppy” nature and pointed pattern defined its name.
Appearance & Coat
A large, heavy-boned cat with a broad head, long body and a silky, medium-length coat that resists matting. Point colours include seal, blue, chocolate, lilac and more, with blue oval eyes.
Temperament
Ragdolls are famously placid, devoted “puppy-cats” that follow their people, greet at the door and tolerate handling and children. They are among the most easy-going breeds.
Care & Grooming
The silky coat needs a few brushings weekly; it mats less than a Persian's. Indoor living is advised (low predator awareness).
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–17 years. Watch for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and bladder stones; reputable breeding and check-ups help.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
