Overview
The Skookum is a rare dwarf breed crossing the Munchkin and LaPerm, with short legs and a soft curly coat. Playful, outgoing and affectionate, it combines a low body with a bouncy rex coat.
History & Origin
Developed in the United States in the 1990s by combining Munchkin (short legs) with LaPerm (curly coat) lines, the Skookum is still an uncommon, emerging breed.
Appearance & Coat
A small cat with very short legs, a moderate body and a plush curly coat in many colours. The curls are loose and springy, covering body and tail.
Temperament
Skookums are friendly, curious and people-oriented, retaining the playful Munchkin energy and LaPerm affection. They suit interactive homes.
Care & Grooming
Gentle combing preserves curls; keep them warm and at healthy weight to protect joints. Indoor living recommended.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–14 years. As a newer dwarf breed, choose ethical breeders who screen skeletal health.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA (experimental) and some registries.
