A domestic breed with a wild-looking spotted coat in many colours but no wild blood; athletic, outgoing and affectionate.

Overview

The Ocicat is a domestic breed with a wild-looking spotted coat in many colours — yet it has no wild blood at all. Athletic, outgoing and playful, it has a large muscular build and an affectionate, people-loving personality.

History & Origin

An accidental creation: in the 1960s a Siamese–Abyssinian cross produced spotted kittens, and later American Shorthair was added for size and spotted pattern. The result was named for its ocelot-like looks.

Appearance & Coat

A large, well-muscled cat with a modified-wedge head, big ears and a short, satin coat marked with thumbprint spots across the body, legs and tail. Colours include tawny, chocolate, cinnamon and silvers.

Temperament

Ocicats are extroverted, friendly and dog-like — many learn to fetch and walk on a lead. They are sociable with strangers and other pets and dislike being alone.

Care & Grooming

Weekly brushing keeps the coat glossy. They are active and benefit from interactive play and companionship; they adapt well to family life.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan is 12–18 years. A generally healthy, robust breed with no major inherited diseases; standard care is enough.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF and the GCCF.
