Overview

A small breed with distinctive floppy lop ears that hang down on each side of a broad, rounded head. Sweet, gentle and affectionate, a very popular pet rabbit.

History & Origin

The Holland Lop is a domestic rabbit breed that developed in Netherlands. Like most modern pet rabbit breeds it was shaped through selective breeding for its distinctive type, size and temperament, and is now kept widely as a companion animal around the world.

Appearance & Coat

It falls into the small (1-1.5kg) size group. It is characterized by distinctive floppy lop ears.

Temperament

The Holland Lop is typically gentle, sweet, affectionate. With patient, gentle handling from a young age it becomes a confident and rewarding companion; like all rabbits it prefers calm surroundings and dislikes rough or sudden handling.

Care & Grooming

Good rabbit care is the same foundation for every breed: a diet built on unlimited grass or timothy hay (about 70–80% of intake), a measured amount of high-fibre pellets, and a daily portion of leafy greens. Fresh water must always be available. House rabbits should live indoors in a safe, enrichment-filled space, litter-train easily, and need daily supervised exercise outside the cage. Lop-eared rabbits need their long ears checked and gently cleaned regularly, and kept dry to prevent infections and waxy build-up.

Health & Lifespan

A well-cared Holland Lop commonly lives 8-12 years, and many reach their early teens. Rabbits have continuously growing teeth, so dental disease, gut stasis (a life-threatening slowdown of digestion) and respiratory infections ("snuffles") are the most common problems. Long-coated or less mobile rabbits are also prone to flystrike in warm weather. Annual checks with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian, spaying/neutering, and a hay-led diet prevent most issues.

Recognition

The Holland Lop is a popular pet and exhibition rabbit. Breed standards and registrations are maintained by national rabbit councils such as the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) and the British Rabbit Council (BRC), and it is widely shown by fanciers.
