Overview

A large olive toad with prominent glands containing potent toxins, the largest native US toad.

History & Origin

The toad is native to Southwestern United States / Mexico. It belongs to the family Bufonidae, a lineage of amphibians distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist keepers.

Appearance & Size

Colorado River Toad is a large (10–18 cm) frog.

Temperament

It shows the typical temperament of its group—research the species for handling guidance.

Care & Husbandry

Toads (Bufonidae) are generally terrestrial, warty-skinned and hardy. Most need a land-based enclosure with hiding spots, shallow water for soaking, and a diet of insects; many tolerate cooler temperatures than tropical frogs. Some secrete mild toxins, so hands-off and post-feeding hygiene matter.

Health & Lifespan

Hardy; watch for dehydration, parasites and skin infections. Avoid handling during toxin secretion and keep enclosures clean. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 10–15 years.

Popularity & Recognition

Toads (Bufonidae) include the common toad and the Colorado River toad; their warty skin and bufotoxin secretions make them unmistakable, and they are among the most widespread amphibians.
