Burmilla
A British breed with a shimmering silver-tipped short coat, created by accident from a Chinchilla Persian and a Lilac Burmese; gentle and laid-back.
Overview
The Burmilla is a British breed with a shimmering silver-tipped short coat and a gentle, laid-back temperament. Medium in build with a soft expression, it arose almost by accident and quickly became prized for its beauty and easy nature.
History & Origin
The breed was unplanned: in 1981 a Chinchilla Persian and a Lilac Burmese at a UK cattery mated unexpectedly, producing stunning silver-kitted kittens. Breeders developed the Burmilla deliberately from 1983, blending Burmese warmth with Persian elegance.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, muscular cat with a short, soft coat tipped with colour (silver, shaded or golden) and expressive outlined eyes. The “make-up” eye-liner and gentle contours give a sweet, open look.
Temperament
Burmillas are gentle, calm and adaptable — affectionate without being clingy. They get along well with children, other cats and dogs, and suit both novice owners and busy multi-pet homes.
Care & Grooming
A weekly brush keeps the tipped coat luminous. Shedding is moderate and grooming needs are low; they enjoy play but are not hyperactive.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Generally healthy with few breed-specific problems; routine care and weight monitoring suffice.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF (as Burmilla).
