Famous for its overlapping, saw-toothed scutes and hawklike beak.

Overview

Famous for its overlapping, saw-toothed scutes and hawklike beak. It is the primary reef-associated turtle and the main source of 'tortoiseshell' used historically in jewellery, which drove heavy exploitation. It has a distinctly tapered shell with a serrated rear margin.

Classification

The Hawksbill Sea Turtle belongs to the suborder Cryptodira (hidden-neck turtles) and the family Cheloniidae. It is the family of hard-shelled sea turtles, with a streamlined, hydrodynamic body and forelimbs modified into powerful flippers for open-ocean swimming. Its scientific name is Eretmochelys imbricata.

Appearance & Distinguishing Features

Species in this family share a smooth, flattened carapace (often heart-shaped or oval), a small head, and large paddle-like flippers. Adults range from about 60 cm to over 1.5 m in shell length depending on the species.

Habitat & Distribution

They are broadly marine, inhabiting tropical and temperate oceans worldwide, from coastal foraging grounds to thousands of kilometres of open sea, and they return to sandy beaches to nest.

Diet & Feeding

Most are carnivorous or omnivorous as juveniles; several species shift toward herbivory (seagrass and algae) as adults, while others specialise on sponges, jellyfish, or crustaceans.

Behavior & Conservation

They undertake some of the longest migrations of any vertebrate between feeding and natal nesting beaches, and sex is determined by nest temperature. All species are protected under CITES Appendix I and face threats from fisheries bycatch, plastic pollution, and habitat loss.

Popularity & Recognition

As the iconic marine turtles of ecotourism and conservation, they are among the most recognised reptiles on Earth, yet every species is considered threatened or endangered.
