Exotic Shorthair
The short-haired version of the Persian, with the same flat face and round eyes but a plush, dense short coat; sweet, calm and affectionate.
Overview
The Exotic Shorthair is the short-haired version of the Persian, with the same flat face, round eyes and cobby body but a plush, dense short coat. Sweet, calm and affectionate, it is nicknamed the “lazy man's Persian”.
History & Origin
Developed in the 1960s by crossing Persians with American Shorthairs (and later Burmese) to achieve the Persian look with easier grooming. It was granted CFA championship status in 1967.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-to-large, heavily boned cat with a round head, short nose, large round eyes and a thick, soft short coat in every Persian colour. The “teddy bear” expression is the trademark.
Temperament
Exotics are gentle, quiet and loving, content to sit on a lap. They are less demanding than Persians vocally and suit calm households and novice owners.
Care & Grooming
The short coat is far easier than a Persian's but still benefits from weekly brushing. Their flat face needs routine eye/wrinkle cleaning to avoid tear staining.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. Brachycephalic issues (breathing, eye, dental) and polycystic kidney disease (PKD) can occur; health-tested lines are important.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
