Overview
The LaPerm is a curly-coated breed with a soft, bouncy rex coat, arising from a spontaneous mutation in the USA. Gentle, devoted and friendly, it has a unique shaggy-curl look and is relatively low-allergen.
History & Origin
The first LaPerm was a bald kitten born on an Oregon farm in 1982 that later grew a curly coat; the trait proved dominant and was developed into a breed celebrated for its affectionate nature.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, muscular cat with a range of curl types — from tight ringlets to a wavy shag — in both short and long hair. The coat is light, springy and often has curled whiskers and ears.
Temperament
LaPerms are loving “ Velcro” cats who follow their people, greet at the door and enjoy being held. They are sociable with other pets too.
Care & Grooming
Gentle combing keeps curls springy without flattening them. They are low-shedding and often tolerated by allergy sufferers.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. A healthy, natural breed with few known hereditary problems.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA and the CFA.
