A tough, compact herding dog from Australia, famed for its blue or red speckled coat and tireless work ethic.

Overview. The Australian Cattle Dog is a lean, powerful herding dog developed in Australia to drive reluctant cattle across vast ranches. It wears a short, weather-resistant coat in striking blue or red merle speckles, and is celebrated for extraordinary stamina, intelligence, and an almost tireless work drive.

History & Origin

Bred in 19th-century Australia from British droving dogs crossed with the native dingo and later refined with blue-merle Collies and Dalmatians, the breed became the quintessential stock dog of the outback, known locally as the Blue or Red Heeler.

Appearance & Coat

Medium-sized and muscular, with a smooth, dense double coat that sheds dirt readily. The blue and red speckled patterns are its signature, often with mask markings.

Temperament

Fiercely loyal to its handler, alert, and highly trainable, but it needs a job to do. Without enough mental and physical challenge it can become bored and destructive.

Care & Exercise

Athletic and demanding: it requires daily vigorous exercise, herding, or dog sports such as agility. Coat care is minimal beyond weekly brushing.

FCI Recognition

Recognized by the FCI in Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs).
