Overview

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, robust longhaired breed from Norway with a waterproof double coat, tufted ears and a bushy tail. Hardy, calm and affectionate, it is an excellent climber and hunter.

History & Origin

A landrace of the Scandinavian forests, featured in Norse mythology (the chariot cat of Freya). It was formalised as a breed in Norway in the 20th century after near-decline.

Appearance & Coat

A big, strong cat with a triangular head, almond eyes and a long, dense water-repellent double coat with a full ruff and breeches. The coat thickens dramatically in winter.

Temperament

”Wegies” are intelligent, independent yet friendly, and famously good climbers. They are gentle with family and adapt well, though they keep a spark of wild independence.

Care & Grooming

Seasonal heavy shedding needs frequent brushing in spring/autumn; the coat is otherwise manageable. They love heights and outdoor access where safe.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan is 12–16 years. Screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and glycogen storage disease (GSD IV); tested lines matter.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
