Bergamasco Shepherd
An ancient Italian herder whose coat forms unique felted flocks, protecting it while it guards livestock.
Overview. The Bergamasco Shepherd is a rustic Italian herding dog instantly recognized by its unusual coat, which forms loose, felted 'flocks' or mats that shield it from weather and predators.
History & Origin
Named for the Bergamo Alps of northern Italy, this ancient breed tended sheep across mountainous terrain for hundreds of years.
Appearance & Coat
Medium to large, with a coat of three hair types that naturally weave into flat flocks by maturity. Once formed, the coat needs only occasional cleaning rather than brushing.
Temperament
Calm, patient, and intelligent, it is an independent thinker that bonds tightly with its family and flock.
Care & Exercise
Moderate exercise suits it; its coat is remarkably low maintenance once the flocks have set.
FCI Recognition
Recognized by the FCI in Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs).
