Overview

A large smooth olive-brown python of northern Australia, secretive and powerful.

History & Origin

The python is native to Australia. It belongs to the family Pythons, a lineage of snakes distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist reptile keepers.

Appearance & Size

Olive Python is a large (2–4 m) snake.

Temperament

Often nervous or defensive; best observed rather than handled, with retreat space respected.

Care & Husbandry

Pythons are non-venomous constrictors; most are powerful, heavy-bodied ambush predators fed on appropriately sized rodents or rabbits. They need large, secure enclosures with a thermogradient, hides, and water for soaking. Many (e.g. ball pythons) are hardy, docile and among the most popular pet snakes, while giants (retics, Burmese) require expert-level space and strength.

Health & Lifespan

Common issues are respiratory infection (from low temps/humidity), scale rot and obesity in over-fed captives. Provide correct temperatures and clean substrate; giants need room to fully stretch. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 20–25 years.

Popularity & Recognition

Pythons are among the world's most kept constrictors—ball pythons alone have hundreds of colour morphs. The reticulated python is the longest snake alive, and the Burmese python is infamous as a Florida invasive.
