Australian Shepherd
A medium, agile herding dog with a lush merle coat, equally at home on the ranch and in the agility ring.
Overview. The Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized, agile herding dog with a beautiful medium-to-long coat in a range of merle and solid colors. Despite the name, it was developed in the United States and is prized for its athleticism, trainability, and versatility.
History & Origin
American ranchers refined the breed from European herding dogs brought by Basque shepherds. It became the iconic rodeo and ranch dog of the American West, excelling at stock work and later at dog sports.
Appearance & Coat
Well-balanced and slightly longer than tall, with a weather-resistant coat and expressive almond eyes that may be blue, brown, or marbled. The merle patterns are especially prized.
Temperament
Smart, eager, and energetic, with a strong desire to work and please. It bonds closely with its family and can be reserved with strangers.
Care & Exercise
High exercise needs: herding, running, and advanced training keep it happy. The coat needs regular brushing, especially when shedding.
FCI Recognition
Recognized by the FCI in Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs).
