Overview
A widespread brown-red frog of Europe, hibernating underwater in winter.
History & Origin
The true frog (ranid) is native to Europe / Asia. It belongs to the family Ranidae, a lineage of amphibians distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist keepers.
Appearance & Size
European Common Frog is a medium (5–9 cm) frog.
Temperament
It shows the typical temperament of its group—research the species for handling guidance.
Care & Husbandry
True frogs (Ranidae) are mostly aquatic or semi-aquatic, strong jumpers with smooth skin. They need a large water area with filtration plus a basking land zone, and a diet of insects, worms or small fish. They are active and rewarding but need room.
Health & Lifespan
Aquatic setups risk poor water quality and bacterial infection; filtration and temperature control are key. Watch for bloating and skin lesions. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 5–10 years.
Popularity & Recognition
True frogs (Ranidae) include the American bullfrog—the largest in North America—and the widespread grass frogs; they epitomise the classic frog body plan.
