Overview
The American Wirehair is a rare breed with a uniquely wiry, crimped and springy coat, a medium muscular body and a gentle, quiet personality. It arose as a spontaneous mutation from an American farm cat.
History & Origin
The first Wirehair appeared in upstate New York in 1966 from a barn-cat litter; breeders developed it using American Shorthairs. It remains one of the rarer US breeds.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, well-muscled cat with a rounded head and a dense, coarse, crimped coat (including the whiskers) that feels springy to the touch. Coat colours follow the American Shorthair palette.
Temperament
American Wirehairs are easy-going, affectionate and fairly low-key. They are adaptable, good with families and not overly vocal.
Care & Grooming
The wiry coat needs only light, infrequent combing (over-brushing flattens the crimp). They shed very little and are low-maintenance.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Generally healthy; as a small gene pool, responsible breeding matters.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA and the CFA.
