Overview

A small domesticated hedgehog with short spines, a rounded body and a docile temperament when tamed. Nocturnal, needs warmth, and is best kept alone.

History & Origin

The African Pygmy Hedgehog is a small exotic mammal that developed in Africa. Like most modern companion exotic species it was shaped by selective breeding for its type, temperament and colour, and is now kept widely by enthusiasts around the world.

Appearance & Size

It falls into the small (0.3-0.6kg) size group. A small domesticated hedgehog with short spines, a rounded body and a docile temperament when tamed. As a hedgehog it shows the typical form and proportions of its group.

Temperament & Behavior

The African Pygmy Hedgehog is typically docile, nocturnal, tame. With patient, consistent handling it becomes a rewarding companion; like all small mammals it thrives on routine, safe space to explore and respectful interaction.

Care & Husbandry

African pygmy hedgehogs are nocturnal and need a warm (24–27°C/75–80°F), escape-proof enclosure with a solid-surface wheel, hiding places and shallow food and water dishes. A diet of high-protein insectivore or cat-kibble base plus insects (mealworms, crickets) and a little fruit and veg suits them. They are mostly solitary and prefer limited, gentle handling.

Health & Lifespan

They live about 4-6 years. Common problems are obesity, dental disease, wobbly-hedgehog syndrome (a progressive neurological condition), mites and gastrointestinal issues; an exotic vet should monitor them.

Popularity & Recognition

African pygmy hedgehogs are a popular exotic pet; responsible breeders follow guidelines for their care and colour varieties.
