A spotted or marbled shorthair developed in Australia, with a soft misty coat and an easygoing, friendly personality; good with children.
Overview
The Australian Mist is a spotted or marbled shorthair developed in Australia, with a soft “misty” coat created by ticking over the pattern, and an easygoing, friendly personality. It is medium-built, gentle and good with children and other pets.
History & Origin
Created in Australia in the late 1970s by Dr Truda Straede, blending Burmese, Abyssinian and domestic shorthair lines to produce a uniquely Australian, even-tempered companion cat.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, moderately muscular cat with a short coat in brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, gold or peach, overlaid with spots or marbling and a delicate “mist”. Green eyes mature from amber.
Temperament
Australian Mists are famously relaxed, affectionate and tolerant — excellent with kids and other animals. They are playful without being destructive and easy to live with.
Care & Grooming
The short coat needs minimal grooming. Their adaptable, friendly nature makes them ideal indoor–outdoor or fully indoor companions.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. A young, carefully developed breed with good overall health; routine care suffices.
Recognition
Recognised by the WCF and governing Australian cat bodies.
