Overview
A small, calm boa with smooth pale bands, native to arid southwestern deserts, easy to keep.
History & Origin
The boa is native to Southwestern United States / Mexico. It belongs to the family Boas, a lineage of snakes distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist reptile keepers.
Appearance & Size
Rosy Boa is a small to medium (60–100cm) snake.
Temperament
Generally docile and tolerant of gentle handling when raised in captivity, though individual temperament varies.
Care & Husbandry
Boas are mostly live-bearing constrictors (giving birth to live young rather than laying eggs). They need spacious enclosures, a thermal gradient and secure locks; they are generally calm and long-lived, with red-tailed and common boas among the most commonly kept.
Health & Lifespan
Robust overall; watch for respiratory infection, inclusion-body disease (IBD, a serious viral illness) and feeding-related regurgitation. Quarantine newcomers and maintain strict hygiene. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 15–25 years.
Popularity & Recognition
Boas include the iconic red-tailed boa and the emerald tree boa; unlike pythons they are mostly live-bearing, a key phylogenetic split in constrictors.
