Cardigan Welsh Corgi
The long-tailed, older corgi type from Wales: a low, sturdy cattle herder with big ears and a big personality.
Overview. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two corgi breeds, a low-set, sturdy herding dog with a fox-like tail, large upright ears, and an outgoing temperament.
History & Origin
Brought to Wales over a thousand years ago, the Cardigan drove cattle by nipping heels, its low body keeping it clear of kicks. It is distinct from the Pembroke, with which it was only later separated.
Appearance & Coat
Long-bodied and short-legged, with a weather-resistant coat in red, sable, brindle, black, and blue merle, plus the signature tail.
Temperament
Affectionate, alert, and clever, with a strong voice and a playful streak.
Care & Exercise
Moderate exercise and weekly brushing; watch weight, as the long back is best kept lean.
FCI Recognition
Recognized by the FCI in Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs).
