Overview

A flat desert lizard with head horns and a sand-colored body, excellent camouflage.

History & Origin

The horned lizard is native to Southwestern United States / Mexico. It belongs to the family Horned Lizards, a lineage of lizards distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist reptile keepers.

Appearance & Size

Desert Horned Lizard is a small to medium (8–12 cm) lizard.

Temperament

It shows the typical temperament of its group—research the species for handling guidance.

Care & Husbandry

Horned lizards are specialised harvester-ant feeders in the wild and are difficult in captivity; they need arid, sandy enclosures with high temperatures, low humidity and UVB. Wild collection has harmed populations—responsible captive breeding is rare, so they are best appreciated in nature or specialist zoos.

Health & Lifespan

Delicate in captivity with narrow dietary needs; most health problems stem from improper ants/diet and arid-habitat mismatch. Wild-collected animals often fail to thrive—conservation status should guide against pet trade. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 5–8 years.

Popularity & Recognition

Horned lizards ('horny toads') are desert specialists of North America, famed for shooting blood from their eyes as a defence and for their flattened, spiky bodies.
