Overview
The Devon Rex is a distinctive breed with a short, soft wavy coat, large bat-like ears and an elfin face. Mischievous, affectionate and highly energetic, it is often called the “pixie” cat.
History & Origin
The first Devon Rex appeared in Devon, England, in 1960 from a curly-coated feral tom and a stray; it is a separate mutation from the Cornish Rex. The breed was developed through careful outcrossing.
Appearance & Coat
A small-to-medium, fine-boned cat with a wedge head, huge low-set ears, prominent cheekbones and a short, rippled coat (very little guard hair). The slender body and long whip tail complete the pixie look.
Temperament
Devons are clownish, playful and intensely people-oriented, often perching on shoulders and “helping” with tasks. They are intelligent, trainable and love warmth and attention.
Care & Grooming
The delicate coat and thin skin need gentle handling; occasional bath and light wipe suffice. Shedding is minimal; they feel the cold, so keep them warm indoors.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Screen for hereditary myopathy and patellar luxation in some lines; otherwise hardy.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
